Things to Know
What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is an oral health professional that focuses on aligning patients’ smiles, correcting their bite patterns, and adjusting their jawbones. Like general or family dentists, they have to graduate from dental school and then complete additional years of training in this particular field.
The most well-known treatment provided by orthodontists is braces.
Can anyone receive orthodontic treatment?
Yes, they can. This method of care is a great solution for patients of all ages to explore. However, you will need to come in for an initial consultation with an orthodontist before any official work can be done. During this session, they’ll physically examine your teeth and gums, take x-rays, and talk to you about your hygiene habits at home. All this information allows them to identify the appropriate form of care for you.
What are the types of braces I can receive?
When you are given the green light to receive orthodontics near you, there are a few different methods that your orthodontist can advise: traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces which fit on the underside of your teeth, and Invisalign.
Your preferences will also be taken into consideration. Many young people are more inclined to acquire Invisalign, as it’s a more subtle process.
Do braces hurt?
Braces don’t hurt but you may feel some discomfort or soreness, especially for the first few weeks. Be kind to yourself and let your body adjust to the treatment. If needed, take Advil or Tylenol. Eventually, you won’t even notice that your braces are there. But remember, everyone’s pain tolerance is different.
How long does orthodontic treatment last?
Again, everyone’s situation is different. On average patients will need to wear their braces for 12-18 months. For some, it can be as long as 2 years, for others, the time frame can be shorter. It depends on the degree of adjustments that are needed to improve both the aesthetic appearance and functionality of your smile.
Do I still need to visit my regular dentist while wearing braces?
Yes, of course! Maintaining and preserving your smile is important, arguably more so when you’re receiving orthodontic care. Tooth decay, infections, and gum disease can negatively impact the length and the outcome of your treatment.
Will I need a retainer after?
Many people wear a retainer once their braces come off but not everyone. It’ll be at the discretion of your orthodontist. The purpose of a retainer is to keep your teeth in their new position; it is typically worn while you sleep.
